OF THE DOUBLE BASS IN THE 20th AND 21$ CENTURY

Rules

'Ihe Valentino Bucchi Foundation announces an intemational performance

competition: Fame and Fortune of the Double bass in the 20d and

2lst century, which will be held in Rome from 17d to 29h of November

2008 (first round on 17th November 200E; semifinal round on 22od

November 2008; final round on 24fr November 2008). The competition

is open to the double-bassists from every country, who were born after

31st December 1974.

 

2. The application form for double-bass competition must be retumed

to lhe following address by October 20s. 2008:

more pholograph of any size of the competitor's choice, both printed on photographic paper;

d) Iist of the chosen pieces;

e) copy of all the chosen pieces for use during rehearsals, included the eventual pieno reduction (unless otherwise indicated in the present regulations) for all the competition rounds. The above copies will not be returned.

3. All candidates must present themselves in Rome, at Sala Baldini,

Piazza Campitelli 9 (near "Piazza Yenezia'') on 17t November 2fi18, at h.lo a.m- with a valid docurnent of identification. At h.ll a.m. of the same day lots will be drawn, in the presence of all competitors, to fix the order of presentation in the competition. All competitors will rehearse according to the order fixed by these lots. This order will be kept throughout all the tests (sernifinal round, on 22no November; fina.l round on 24m November 2008). It can be changed by the Competition Management only in case of absolute necessity.

 

4. The candidates must come with their own instruments.

The competition consists of three rounds: a) eliminatory, b) semifinal, c)

Iinal. All rounds are public. No more than 5 competrtors will be admitted to the semifinal round; no more than 4 to the final round.

Competitors may come with their own accompanists. Otherwise, the

competition Secretariat will provided them with an accompanying pianist, free cost for the panicipant, before the elminatory phase for a maximum of 35' and for muimum of t hour, before the semifinal and the final phases.

The Valentino Bucchi Foundation may a.llow recordings, radio or TV

broadcasts, on line, etc. of the rounds and of possible concerts of intemational competitions and Meetings Festival.

 

5. PROGRAM

 

Eliminatory Phase (Orchestral tuning)

 

Competitors must perform three pieces, by different authors, one to

be chosen frorn Grouo A.

Obligatory pieces:

- V. Bucchi, Concerto grottesco per contrabbasso e archi, 1967

(reduction for double bass and piano) (edition Premio Valentino Bucchi

1998, Via Ubaldino Peruzzi 20,00139 Roma);

- a piece for double-bass solo, chosen by the participant, wrilten and

published in the 20e or 2l st century, by a composer of the same nationality as that of the participant. Participants must send three copies of this

composition with the requesr to enter the meeting

- J. Françaix Theme varie pour contrebasse solo, chosen by: Ed. M.

Esdtig, Paris, 1976

- or a piece for double-bass solo, writen and published in the 20th or

21st century, since 1950, Participants must send three copies of this composition

with the request to enter the meeting.

N,B - The participants must perfom the above-meDtioned compositions, entirely or in part at the discretion of the Commission.

 

Semilinal Phase (Solo tuning)

 

Participants must perform three pieces, by different authors, choseD

6. Commission - The Commission will be composed of double-bassists, strings players and personalities of the intemational music world. Among them, the Comission itself will choose its President at the opening of its session. Judgement by the Comission is final. Commission members camot subsequently participate as candidates in the Bucchi performance and composition Prize-

 

Prizes - The Bucchi Foundation will award 3 indivisible prizes:

 

lst prize: a scholarship-reimbursement of Euro 121000,00 gross, for

those having permanent and temporary address in a foreign country,

Euro10,500.00 gross, for those having permanent and temporary

address in ltaly. For each winner, the scholarship can be replaced, even in part, with a direct payment by Valentino Bucchi Foundation of the staying expenses in Italy during the competition. These expenses must be supplied with valid documents.

 

2od prize: a scholarship-reimbursement of Euro 7,000,.00 gross, for

lhose having permanenl and temporary address in a foreign country,

or of Euro 5,5000.00 gross, for those having permanenl and temporary address in ltaly. For each winner, the scholarship can be replaced, even in part, with a direct payment by valentino Bucchi Foundation of the staying expenses in Italy duriDg thc competition. These expenses must be supplied with valid documents.

 

3rd prize: a scholrship-reimbursement of Euro 4200.00 gross, for

those having permanent and temporary address in a foreign country,

or of Euro 3,200.00 gross, for those having permanent and temporary

address in ltaly. For each wirurer, the scholarship can be replaced, even in part, with a direct payment by Valentino Bucchi Foundation of the staying expenses in Italy during the competition. These expenses must be supplied with valid documents.

The prize and scholarship wimers must participate, free of charge for the Foundation, in eventual concerts (with a progfiim to be agreed upon with the competition Management). During the following two days the concett may be repeated and may be recorded by radios, televisions, on line, etc.

Participation free of charge for the Foundation in these concerts is required for the prize and scholarship-reimboursement winners.

The prize and scholarship-reimboursement wimers must particlpate

also, free of charge for the Foundation, in eventual final concens for the Valentino Bucchi Prize and for the International Competirions and

Ivleetings Festival and to all cultural and artistic events organized in those days.

Should excessive financial or organization difficulties arise about the

competitjon or above-mentioned concerts, the Valentino Bucchi Prize and the collaborating Instilutions will take no responsibility.

In (he programs of possible offercd concerts the winners must include

the wiming piece of the Valentino Bucchi 2008 lntematiooal Composition Compelition for double-bass if the Competitlons Muagemenl so decrdes.

Each competitor who has gone through the setnifinal round without

being finalist or awarded one ofthe prizes, Eill be guaranteed a scholafship-

reimbursement of Euro 2,fi)0.00 gross. for those having permanent

and temporary address in a foreign country, or of Euro 1,400,fi) gross,

for those having permanent and temporary address in ltaly. The scho.

larship can be replaced, even in part, with a direct payment by Valentino

Bucchi Foundation of the staying expenses in Italy during the competition. These expenses must be supplied with valid documents.

All participmts who don't live in Italy ard play in the final round

without being awarded one of the prizes will also be refunded a scholarship- reimbursement for a marimum of Euro 350.00 gross. This reirnbursement is exclusively valid for the staying expenses in Italy during the competition and must be supplied with valid documents.

 

8. The Jury reserves the right not to award any prize. The Jury may also cite a maximum of three participants for the violin and viola Meeting it considers outstanding, even if not among those awarded a prize.

 

9. The first prize-wimers cannot subsequently paflicipate in the same

competition in the Bucchi performance and composition Prize. The winners of the other prizes can participate only if they enttely change their program, with the exception of the Valentilo Bucchi obligatory pieces.

 

10. The Orgarizing Committee has the right to modify rhe presenr

regulations in case of absolute necessity.

 

I l. The request to participate in the competition implies the acceptance by the participant of all points in the present regulations.

 

12. Should the interpretation of the regulations be contested, rhe Italian text is defiritive. The Forum of Rome is competent for all controversies.
