is a
mixture of original compositions and adaptations of French songs. As a composer
Michel Zenino achieved succes with his sextet by winning first prize in the
orchestra competitions at the festivals of Sorgues and Paris-La Defense as well
as the Sacem prize for the double-bassist. Claude Carrière described “Derive
Gauche” Zenino’s album of deranging arrangements, as “a wonderful repertoire of
genuine symphonies and French songs as never heard before...” In the group
AMAZe we find these qualities of the double-bassist, combined with more freedom
for the solo artist (“a virtuoso of great sensitivity”) than in his previous
work. This new group is an unique combination of the drummer Jean-Pierre Arnaud
(formely with Johnny Griffin) with whom Michel began his jazz career in
Marseille. This exciting rythm section has performed with among others, Steve
Grossman, Archie Shepp, Barney Wilen, Siegfried Kessler and the Belmondo
Brothers; The saxophonist Christophe Monniot plays in Daniel Humair’s Baby-Boom
and created the Cie des musiques à ouïr”; And the pianist Frank Avitabile, who
won the”Django d’or” in 1999, the “Victoire du Jazz” in 2004, and who devide
his time between his own trio, his solo albums world tours with Manu Katche.
All in all, an explosive coctail! The quartet played to an ecstatic audience at
their first concert at the coemedia in Miramas: the newspaper “La Provence”
exclaimed in its headline “Zenino set the house on fire!”
