ABCDF  BASS' 2008  ORCHESTRA COMPETITION

The competition is open to all bassists age 19 years or older.

The organization is the same as an orchestra audition.

Two “Charles Labro” Prizes of 1500€ and 750€ respectively will be awarded.

Program:

1st round  (double bass alone)

J.S. Bach, transcribed by Sterling: an Allemande OR Courante OR Gigue (1st repeat only) of the candidate’s choice from one of the 6 cello Suites  (Peters Edition no. 238b)

Orchestral excerpts: 

- R. Strauss: Don Juan 

From rehearsal letter A to 9th bar of A, from 3 bars before rehearsal letter B to 4th bar of B, from rehearsal letter F to 7 bars before rehearsal letter G, from 5th bar of rehearsal letter I to rehearsal letter K, from 7th bar of rehearsal letter O to rehearsal letter P, from rehearsal letter R to rehearsal letter T, from 4 bars before rehearsal letter X to rehearsal letter Y.

- Haydn: Symphonie no. 88, final movement, bar 38 to bar 83, then bar 98 to bar 142

2nd round (with accompaniment)

- 1st movement of one of the following concertos (orchestral tuning): Bottesini n° 2, Dittersdorf n° 2,  Koussevitzky (op. 3)   

- Orchestral excerpts:  Beethoven, Symphony no. 5, Scherzo, from beginning to bar 100, then bar 128 to bar 218 with repeat.

- Bartok, Concerto for orchestra, 1st movement, from beginning to bar 135  download Bartok 1   Bartok 2

- Mozart: Symphony no. 40, 1st movement

- Strauss, Ein HeldenLeben, from rehearsal no. 9 to 5th bar of rehearsal no. 10, then 2 bars from rehearsal no. 30, then rehearsal no. 77 to rehearsal no. 78

- Moussorgsky / Ravel: Pictures at an exhibition, from rehearsal no. 56 to rehearsal no. 62

- Solo from Verdi: Rigoletto

- Solo from Stravinsky: Pulcinella

- Solo from Mahler: Symphony No. 1,  3rd movement

- Solo from Prokofiev: Lieutenant Kije

The jury will determine the order of the pieces.

A pianist will be provided (rehearsal time will depend on the number of candidates participating), but the candidates may bring their own accompanist.

Section A1:  “beginners” age 7 to 10 years at time of registration (proof of age required).

Program: 

- Pascal Proust: Une histoire dramatique (Fertile Plaine editions).

- One piece of the candidate’s choice from the double-bass repertoire OR a free improvisation OR a composition by the candidate, duration 4 minutes maximum. The candidate may perform with another young artist. 

Section A2:  “beginners” age 11 to 14 years at time of registration (proof of age required)

Program:

- Francis Coiteux: Batifolage (Combre Editions).

- One piece of the candidate’s choice from the double bass repertoire OR a free improvisation OR a composition by the candidate, duration 4 minutes maximum. The candidate may perform with another young artist. 

Section B:  advanced players age 11 to 14 years at time of registration (proof of age required)

Program:

- Jean-Louis Martin: Iquade (Combre Editions)

- One piece of the candidate’s choice from the double-bass repertoire OR a free improvisation OR a composition by the candidate, duration 6 minutes maximum. The candidate may perform with another young artist. 

Section C:  advanced players age 15 to 18 years at the time of registration (proof of age required)

Program:

- Remy Yulzari: Errance (Combre Editions).

- One piece of the candidate’s choice from the double-bass repertoire OR a free improvisation OR a composition by the candidate, duration 12 minutes maximum. The candidate may perform with another young artist.

Deadline for registration: October 5, 2008. A pianist will be provided but candidates may perform with their own accompanist. Parents are responsible for their children: accommodation is at their own expense. A storage room will be available for instruments.
