Neubert.jpgDr. Neubert (b. 1953) is Professor of Double Bass and Director of Instructional Technologies at the Butler School of Music in The University of Texas at Austin and has been the Principal Bass of the Austin Symphony, the Austin Ballet and the Austin Lyric Opera since 1984.  He is a Past-President of the International Society of Bassists (1993-95) and was the director of two ISB Conventions (1986 and 1993).  Neubert often performs as a soloist and has given many lectures and workshops both nationally and internationally including France, Germany, Hungary, Great Britain, Brazil, and China.  He is an avid fan  and promoter of music technology, which began in 1975 when he composed and performed his first electronic music  piece, Moby Bass.  Using  MIDI accompaniments followed in 1990  and included “Scales Without Tears”, “Bassercises” and performing Moses Fantasy live with a virtual pianist (MIDI accompaniment).  In 1996, he began preparing instructional CD ROMS, “Bass Teacher on a Disk”  which incorporated basic pedagogical instruction and video performances of selected standard works in addition to playable MIDI accompaniments for each piece.  David has given many workshops and presentations on using them since.  His latest project has been in designing online instructional courses in basic music theory and music history.  He also is a founding member of the Austin POPS (www.austinpops.org), designed their website and plays electric bass for the group.

                   Neubert grew up in Pebble Beach, California, and completed his graduate work at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Texas at Austin.  Prior to coming to Austin, he was the principal bass of the Wichita Symphony and the bass professor at Wichita State University (1978-84), and before that, principal bass of the Springfield Symphony while teaching at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (1975-78) and yes, David Gage and Avery Sharp were a couple of his first students.  Neubert was the Double Bass Forum Editor for the American String Teacher Association from 1987-89 and has published numerous articles in the area of bass pedagogy and contemporary music, including articles in Perspectives of New Music, The American String Teacher  and the ISB Journal.  His first recording, Moby Bass and Other Electronic Double Bass Works, features four original pieces for bass and tape.  His students, including Yuan Xiong Lu and Karl Siegfried,  have won places in several national competitions and distinguished themselves in the many facets of double bass playing.
